Hand

Hand is the 2nd Charcoal drawing I had done on paper, sort of my practices of a medium I was just becoming acquainted with. The paper was torn up then I stuck it back together on top of another sheet of paper, I then drew upon it. Tearing the paper up and re-joining it back together helps to give the finished piece a little more textural interest, too.

There are several artists that use this method, take for instance Frank Auerbach. One of his self-portraits took him over 70 sittings to actually finish it, he would draw, scrub it out, draw scrub it out etc, and each layer he would patch it up with bits of torn paper.
