Textured papers or pastel papers are all good to use for charcoal drawing, this is because the textured surface is rough, so it makes it easier for the charcoal to adhere to. Frank Auerbach spends many hours, sometimes even months, to finish one of his works. He draws on the paper, scratching and drawing for hours then rubbing it out, and then he will start again using the same piece of paper.
