In Between-1,
A Journey Through Colour and Memory
In Between‑1 began with a moment so simple and so full of joy that I felt compelled to hold onto it before it slipped away. At a recent family wedding, my grandchildren appeared in soft baby‑blue bridesmaid dresses with pristine white cardigans, their colours glowing gently in the afternoon light. There was something about that combination — the innocence of the white, the serenity of the blue — that stayed with me long after the day had ended. I knew immediately that I wanted to translate that feeling into paint.
This painting became my way of preserving that fleeting moment, not through realism, but through colour, movement, and memory. It is the first in a pair of works exploring the emotional spaces that exist between experience and recollection — the in‑between places where memory softens, shifts, and becomes something new.
The Inspiration — A Wedding, A Breeze, A Flash of Blue
As I watched my grandchildren that day, their dresses fluttering like small wings in the breeze, I felt a mixture of joy, nostalgia, and tenderness. The baby blue carried a sense of calm and happiness, while the white cardigans added a purity that felt almost symbolic — a reminder of childhood, of beginnings, of the gentle innocence that families gather to celebrate.
Those colours were more than fabric. They were emotion. They were the essence of the day.
In Between‑1 became my attempt to hold onto that essence, to translate it into a visual language that could be felt rather than simply seen.
The Artistic Process — Painting from Memory, Not Sight
The canvas for this piece is modest in size — 50 cm by 40 cm — but the emotional landscape it holds is expansive. When I began painting, I didn’t sketch or plan. I allowed the memory to guide my hand. The first strokes were instinctive, loose, and full of movement. I wasn’t trying to recreate the dresses or the cardigans literally; I wanted to capture the feeling of them, the way they moved, the way the colours interacted with the air around them.
Baby blue became the anchor of the composition. I layered it in varying intensities — soft washes, deeper tones, and moments of brightness — to evoke the playfulness and lightness of the children. The white entered the painting as interruptions of calm, small breaths of stillness within the swirling blue. These white elements became symbolic pauses, moments of clarity within the joyful chaos of the day.
As I worked, I found myself painting not just what I remembered, but how I remembered it. Memory is never static. It shifts, blurs, and sharpens in unexpected places. In Between‑1 became a reflection of that fluidity.
Emotion in Colour — What In Between‑1 Holds
What I love most about abstract work is its ability to hold emotion without dictating meaning. In Between‑1 is deeply personal to me, yet it invites viewers to bring their own memories to the surface. The colours may remind someone of a childhood holiday, a family gathering, a moment of calm, or a fleeting joy they thought they had forgotten.
The painting is not about the wedding itself — it is about the feeling of being surrounded by family, of witnessing innocence, of recognising the beauty in small moments. It is about the emotional residue that lingers long after an event has passed.
Symbolism — Layers of Family, Time, and Connection
Every element in In Between‑1 carries symbolic weight:
• The blues represent tranquillity, joy, and the gentle presence of childhood.
• The whites speak to innocence, beginnings, and the clarity of memory.
• The layered strokes reflect the complexity of family — overlapping experiences, shared histories, and the way our lives intertwine.
• The movement within the composition mirrors the fleeting nature of time, especially during moments of celebration.
As I painted, I found myself thinking about how quickly children grow, how weddings mark transitions not only for the couple but for everyone present, and how memory becomes the thread that ties these moments together.
The Series — Exploring the Space Between Moments
In Between‑1 is the first of two paintings in this series. It captures the immediate joy of the wedding — the colours, the movement, the emotional brightness of the day. The second piece, which follows this one, shifts into a more reflective space. It explores what happens after the celebration ends, when the memory begins to settle and take on new meaning.
Together, the two works form a conversation about time, emotion, and the way we carry our experiences forward. In Between‑1 is the spark — the moment of joy — while the second painting becomes the echo.
Viewer Interpretation — A Shared Emotional Landscape
One of the most rewarding aspects of creating abstract work is witnessing how others respond to it. Viewers often see things I never intended — landscapes, figures, memories of their own. That is the beauty of abstraction: it becomes a mirror for the viewer’s inner world.
With In Between‑1, I hope people feel invited to pause, to breathe, to remember. The painting offers a moment of stillness in a busy world, a chance to reconnect with the simple joys that often pass too quickly.
Conclusion — A Celebration of the Spaces In Between
In Between‑1 is, at its heart, a celebration of family, memory, and the emotional resonance of colour. It preserves a moment that meant the world to me — the sight of my grandchildren in their blue dresses and white cardigans, full of innocence and joy — and transforms it into something that can be shared.
Through this painting, I wanted to honour the beauty of small moments, the ones that stay with us long after the day has ended. It is a reminder that life is made up of these in‑between spaces — the quiet pauses, the fleeting glances, the colours that linger in our minds.
In Between‑1 stands as a testament to the power of memory, the warmth of family, and the way art can hold the emotions we cannot always put into words.
